The synovium thickens as a result of inflammation. It can eventually invade and destroy cartilage, the connective tissue that cushions the ends of the bones, if left untreated.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a wear-and-tear arthritis that affects the joints. Hands, hips, and knees. The cartilage in a joint begins to deteriorate, and the underlying bone changes as a result of OA. These alterations typically take time to manifest and worsen. Pain, stiffness, and swelling are all common symptoms of osteoarthritis.
